Aubrey McClendon (born Aubrey Kerr McClendon in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 14, 1959) was an American businessman and the founder and chief executive officer of American Energy Partners. He was also the co-founder and retired chief executive officer and chairman of Chesapeake Energy. Aubrey was very outspoken about his advocacy for natural gas as a cleaner and safer alternative to oil and coal fuels. Aubrey was a part-owner of the NBA team, the Oklahoma City Thunder and he was also a financial supporter of various non-profit organizations and public institutions in Oklahoma City. In addition, Aubrey owned interests in multiple businesses, restaurants, and real estate properties in the greater Oklahoma City area. In 2008 he was the highest paid CEO of all the S&P 500 companies, receiving a compensation package totaling $112 million. On March 1, 2016, Aubrey was indicted by the United States Department of Justice for charges of conspiring “to rig bids for the purchase of oil and natural gas leases in northwest Oklahoma.” The following day, March 2, 2016, he died in a single-vehicle collision. The Oklahoma City Police said “He pretty much drove straight into the wall.” He was not wearing a seat-belt at the time of the crash and he was to have appeared in court later that day.

Aubrey McClendon lived in Oklahoma City with his wife Katie, whom he married in 1981. Together they had three adult children: Jack, Callie, and Will. Aubrey’s personal wine collection was estimated at one time to include more than 100,000 bottles. He also held an extensive collection of antique maps of Oklahoma.
